View All Critic Reviews May 25, The film effectively functions as a spoof and homage to "Star Trek", and the cast all does solid to great work Allen even manages to not only be tolerable, but a surprisingly good lead here.
Alec B Super Reviewer. Sep 13, Always wanted to see this I've heard some really good things about it. Anyway, it was really funny I loved this movie.
Check it out for some classic 90s comedy. Stephen S Super Reviewer. Jan 24, The film brilliantly satirizes '60s science fiction television, such as Star Trek, and the culture of fandom.
The story follows a group of washed up actors from the cult sci-fi television series Galaxy Quest, who are abducted by a race of aliens that have no concept of fiction and see the Galaxy Quest cast as real life heroes.
The comedy is especially good and does an excellent job at spoofing the sci-fi genre and all the topes that it uses. Additionally, the casting is inspired, featuring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Sam Rockwell, who all give exceptional performances that balance the comedy and the action.
By Grabthar's Hammer, Galaxy Quest is a hilariously entertaining adventure. Dann M Super Reviewer. Aug 04, In all fairness this could easily be an unofficial sequel to the Star Trek franchise, a freak alternate universe thingy hehe.
A cool satire or parody of the classic sci-fi franchise that mocks and homages whilst being immensely enjoyable to boot. I never really thought I would like a Tim Allen film, he's never been my cup of tea and his films aren't exactly gold dust.
This has to be his best and funniest film to date with a terrific Shatner type performance as the Captain.
I love the way he oozes around the conventions basking in the glory that is he. The show revolves around him, it would fold without him, grasping at all the attention that comes his way The rest of the crew is also created, cast and visualized perfectly.
The best for me being Rickman as the tired failed dramatic actor 'Dane aka Alongside Allen with his ego trip Rickman is so so damn hilarious, the way he cringes at all the fans, shuns the ridiculous questions, the attention and rolls his eyes whilst squirming at the geeks that swarm around him.
Kudos to the extras that played the geeks and nerds. I dunno if they were actual fans of Star Trek or general sci-fi I'm guessing they were but I'll bet they were regulars to conventions.
Whoever they were they really nailed the whole image and reputation these type of folk have. The interaction with Rickman's character in one sequence is flippin' comedy gold!.
The whole crew line up is excellent but the way the film floats between the in-film TV show and the real situation they are all thrown into is sheer quality.
Surely the best humour must be how Allen's crew must adapt and recreate how to actually take command of a real starship, fire torpedoes, land, use communications etc What is really hilarious is how its all so accurate to Star Trek!
I love how Shalhoub tries to explain to Allen that their engine is basically screwed but in the most basic babyish terms he can.
The way Rockwell points out that there's a red thingy moving towards the green thingy on the radar screen, and that he thinks they are the green thingy.
Also the way he has constant panic attacks as he knows he's the expendable crew member that always bites the dust in these types of situations redshirt.
I realise the whole point of her character is she does nothing in their show but poor old Weaver does pretty much nothing in the film also.
Its odd to see her so sexed up too, the blonde doesn't suit her methinks, I reckon they should of cast more of a bimbo for that role myself in reality , space slut played by a real life slut of sorts.
Mitchell was another character that didn't have as much of the screen time but the sequences where he's trying to fly the ship, especially as they leave space dock, are priceless.
I don't think it was too hard to nail the look of this film at tall, it only needed rickety sets and the odd bit of CGI.
The 'TV in-show' scenes were nicely crafted to look cheesy, the actual sets for the real ship were also slightly leaning towards cheesy so no problems there.

While fandoms such as that for Star Trek existed at the time of the film, the size and scope presented by the fan conventions in the film had not been seen as much in ; since then, major fan conventions such as the San Diego Comic Con have become significant events that draw mainstream attention.
The film also depicted fandoms using their numbers to influence production companies to revive cancelled works, such as with The Expanse , Veronica Mars , Arrested Development , and Twin Peaks.
The novella Rabbit Remembered by John Updike mentions the character of Laliari from the film. Several actors who have had roles on various Star Trek television series and films have commented on Galaxy Quest in light of their own experiences with the franchise and its fandom.
I had originally not wanted to see [ Galaxy Quest ] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said "You must not miss this movie!
See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful.
And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans. I've had flashbacks of Galaxy Quest at the many conventions I've gone to since the movie came out.
I thought it was an absolute laugh-a-minute. I thought it was very funny, and I thought the audience that they portrayed was totally real, but the actors that they were pretending to be were totally unrecognizable.
Certainly I don't know what Tim Allen was doing. He seemed to be the head of a group of actors, and for the life of me I was trying to understand who he was imitating.
The only one I recognized was the girl playing Nichelle Nichols. I loved Galaxy Quest. I thought it was brilliant satire, not only of Trek , but of fandom in general.
The only thing I wish they had done was cast me in it, and have me play a freaky fanboy who keeps screaming at the actor who played 'the kid' about how awful it was that there was a kid on the spaceship.
I think it's a chillingly realistic documentary. It is a powerful piece of documentary filmmaking. And I do believe that when we get kidnapped by aliens, it's going to be the genuine, true Star Trek fans who will save the day.
I was rolling in the aisles. And [star] Tim Allen had that Shatner-esque swagger down pat. And I roared when the shirt came off, and [co-star] Sigourney [Weaver] rolls her eyes and says, "There goes that shirt again.
How often did we hear that on the set? The film was released by DreamWorks Home Entertainment on VHS and DVD on May 2, The DVD version included a minute behind-the-scenes feature, cast and crew biographies and interviews, and deleted scenes.

In April , Paramount Television, along with the movie's co-writer Gordon, director Parisot, and executive producers Johnson and Bernstein, announced they were looking to develop a television series based on Galaxy Quest.
The move was considered in a similar vein as Paramount's revivals of Minority Report and School of Rock as television series.
In January , after the unexpected death of Alan Rickman from pancreatic cancer , Tim Allen commented in The Hollywood Reporter about the franchise's chance of a revival:.
I'm not supposed to say anything—I'm speaking way out of turn here—but Galaxy Quest is really close to being resurrected in a very creative way.
It's closer than I can tell you but I can't say more than that. The real kicker is that Alan now has to be left out. It's been a big shock on many levels.
Speaking to the Nerdist podcast in April , Sam Rockwell revealed that the cast had been about ready to sign on for a follow up with Amazon , but Rickman's death, together with Allen's television schedule, had proved to be obstacles.
He also said he believed Rickman's death meant the project would never happen. However, the plans were revived in August , with the announcement that Paul Scheer would be writing the series.
Abrams cast of Star Trek. Following the dismissal of Amy Powell as president of Paramount Television in July , Scheer said the Galaxy Quest series had been put on hold while Paramount's management was being re-established, but anticipated the show would continue forward after that.

Allen stated that a film sequel script is nearly ready to go as of January The script had been near completion for production by but with Rickman's death, it would have to undergo major rewrites as the core story focused on the relationship between Nesmith and Dane Allen and Rickmen's characters, respectively.
A central plot element was to have the Protector and its crew affected by time dilation during space flight, which Allen considered a boon for the uncertain production of the film.
While Allen said there were no immediate efforts for the sequel's production, he and the other cast and crew keep circulating the idea and believe it would be easy to restart the effort.
